What is Hip Hop?
            Just as Jazz music is ever connected to New Orleans, or Country music to Tennessee.  Hip Hop music will always be connected to the Bronx, NYC.  It began in the 1970s, in the projects and ghettos of South Bronx.  Kids living here didn’t have the room in their homes for the typical instruments used to make music.  Hip Hop was the offspring of the union between rapping and the old-school beats of funk, soul, and blues.  It developed four elements: the MC, Graffiti, Breakdancing, and DJing.  Hip Hop created a culture that today has become mainstream and controversial.  The characteristics of Hip Hop’s lyrical style are unique and artistic.  As Hip Hop artist Ice T said, “Rappers introduced poetry to a whole new generation.”
